Disaster Response: Flooding on the Gold Coast

January 12, 2024 | 4:15 p.m.

When a storm of devastating proportions swept across the Gold Coast recently, it left many families in dire straits. In the aftermath, however, an inspiring story of resilience and generosity emerged, demonstrating the indomitable human spirit.

The team from Commonwealth Bank Pacific Fair did not stand by idly. They were deeply moved by the pressing need for food hampers in their community and decided to take action. Their response was swift and decisive, rallying together to assemble and distribute these much-needed hampers to affected families.

But this story of hope and compassion doesn't end there. Two young sisters, daughters of one of the team members, demonstrated that empathy and altruism know no age. Upon hearing about the efforts of their parent's team, they felt compelled to contribute in their own way. The girls decided to donate their personal pocket money to aid other families in need. This heartfelt gesture not only exemplified their kindness but also highlighted the importance of teaching our younger generation about empathy and community service.

This tale is a testament to the power of community and the impact of each individual's contribution. It demonstrates how, in times of crisis, ordinary people can step up and become heroes in their own right, making a difference in the lives of others.

The Commonwealth Bank Pacific Fair team, together with these two young sisters, have truly embodied the spirit of Australia. Their actions have not only provided immediate relief to those affected but have also instilled a sense of hope and solidarity within the community.

As we share their story, we hope to inspire others to follow in their footsteps. In times of adversity, let us remember that every act of kindness, no matter how small, can make a significant difference. Together, we can weather any storm.

In the face of unprecedented flooding on the Gold Coast, Convoy of Hope Australia is joining with local partners to help bring support to those in need.

In the wake of severe weather that has wreaked havoc on the Gold Coast and its surrounding areas, Convoy of Hope Australia is responding with immediate aid and support for the affected communities. The damage left behind by these catastrophic conditions is nothing short of "scary," as described by Queensland Premier Stephen Myles.

The power outages have been extensive, with fears that thousands could be without electricity for up to 10 days.

Severe weather warnings remain in place for Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast by the Bureau of Meteorology. Several catchments had received 200-300 millimetres of rainfall, leading to rising floodwaters across the Gold Coast hinterland. This recent flooding crisis, which has claimed ten lives over the holiday period, follows a series of similar incidents that have struck the East Coast.

In reaction to the deluge, Seqwater, a Queensland government agency, has initiated controlled dam releases as several ungated dams overflow. Flood operations engineers have been monitoring dam levels vigilantly, warning of possible dam releases within the next 48 hours.

With an estimated 11,000 people still without power, the scale of damage to the energy infrastructure is immense. "This isn't reconnection, this is rebuild," Despite the challenges, Premier Stephen Myles assures that everyone is working diligently to remove debris and restore power.

The Gold Coast and Scenic Rim have experienced intense rainfall, with up to 500 millimetres in some locations over the last 24 hours. Authorities are advising the public to stay off the roads and avoid low-lying areas.

Convoy of Hope Australia is committed to providing vital support to those in need. We are inspired by the resilience and spirit of the affected communities.
