Joel’s Journey: From One Meal a Day to Consistent Strength

Philippines Reported by Convoy of Hope

“One time, I was robbed by one of my classmates at school,” said Joel, a young boy in the Philippines.

Inconveniences are part of life. But for Joel, losing his food was more than an inconvenience.

Joel, his parents, and his seven siblings lived under the daily burden of poverty, brought on by unpredictable job opportunities. Some days, no income meant no food.

“I used to only eat one little meal, once a day — most of the time, it was just kamote (sweet potato),” said Joel. “I didn’t have any energy at school or in doing household chores.”

Convoy of Hope’s Children’s Feeding program is meeting immediate needs in Joel’s village — and transforming his community. And Joel is enjoying eating his favorite foods.

“Joel’s journey reminds me that Children’s Feeding is not just about food — it’s giving children the strength to dream again,” one Convoy team member said. “Despite the challenges his family faces, he remains joyful, hopeful, and determined to finish his studies and serve others someday.”

“I dream of becoming a police officer so I can protect others and help my family get out of poverty,” shared Joel.

Joel doesn’t dwell on the unfairness of his past. Instead, with the support of consistent meals, he is striving toward a future built on strength and compassion.
